How to Make a Vision Board

If you aren’t familiar with vision boarding, you are missing out on a powerful tool that is not only super fun, but will also help you visualize your goals in a way that makes you more likely to achieve them. Not only do I love doing this in my personal life, but it’s also something that can be a powerful motivator for your business. What do you want your brand, your business, your life to look like in one, five, or even ten years from now … published author, six figure income, master of mind control? Every adjective and description that pops into your head, write down on paper. We are going to create a vision board with those words and ideas.

What is a vision board?

A vision board is a collage of words and pictures that visually represent, reflect, remind, and put into perspective a goal that you have. It’s kind of like taking all the thoughts and ideas spiraling on in your head and harnessing them into a cohesive, tangible road map. You can use a vision board to reflect your entire business, brand, or personal life or just the next year of it. There is no limit to how short or long term the vision board is created for.

How do you make a vision board?

There are many different ways to go about it. My preferred method is arts and crafts because in all honesty I find it quite cathartic, but for my tech-savvy gurus out there, you can create a digital vision board with online graphics and photos by collaging images together in a photo/editing software. You can also pin images to a cork board, post them on a wall, planner, whatever draws your attention. For me personally, a framed magazine collage is the way I like to do it.

Gather Your Supplies

Assuming you are embarking on the cathartic method of vision boarding, here are the supplies I would recommend:

  • an X-acto blade or scissors
  • a cutting mat if you’re going to be using an X-acto blade
  • a glue stick
  • a large stack of magazines
  • Bristol board or card stock
  • frame unless you decide to use something durable for your base like canvas or cardboard

Scavenge Old Magazines

So you kind of have an idea of what you’re looking for based on your notes. Now is the fun part! Start flipping through the magazines searching for words and pictures that jump out at you and fit with your vision list of adjectives. Maybe you find a picture of the Eiffel tower and on your list it says “traveler” or “go to Paris” then the Eiffel toward is going to be what represents that goal. You’ll cut it out and add it to your collage.

Once complete, hang it up on your wall and let it be a reminder of the ambitions you have for your business and yourself. I often will glance up at mine and laugh at how many things I haven’t been actively working toward, but have already manifested in my life for the year. Power of association I guess? The secret behind the vision board is a reminder not only of the life you want to live, who you want to be or the future of your brand, but it’s a reflection of who you are and what already is. It’s a reminder to live life everyday as if that’s already what your life looks like. Do you use vision boards? How do you find they impact your personal and professional goals?
